## What happens

A young man, Vladimir Panshin, arrives at the Kalitin household on horseback, showing off his new horse Orlando to Marya Dmitrievna and her daughter Lenotchka. After a brief display of horsemanship, he dismounts and enters the drawing-room, where he is joined by Marya Dmitrievna's eldest daughter, Lisa.
